Decorating Tip #4

With autumn just around the corner, it's time to think in rich harvest colours. Time to store your bright coloured candles and linens, and replace them with the rich warm tones of fall... Browns and rusts, creams and gold. Don’t be afraid to mix your old with something new. A bright yellow candle that represented summer sunshine will translate well when mixed with a harvest blend of earth tones represented autumn leaves. Take a large dinner plate and put a new two tone candle of brown and cream in the middle. Then go for a walk and pick up some leaves and twigs, pine cones and walnuts. Surround the candle and completely cover the plate. This makes a lovely center piece. You can use three smaller candles for a more multi-dimensional look. If your home is small, use a lunch plate or a saucer instead. Use scented candles to create a cozy seasonal environment that welcomes your guests as they come in the door. Use unscented candles at the dinner table so the aroma of the food can be fully appreciated. Collect long twigs and place them in a floor vase or tall basket. Add rocks to weight the bottom and keep the vase steady, especially on carpeted floors. As you transition into the winter season and Christmas, you can add a few small decorations to change your look again.
